Harnessing the Dead Sea basin's potential

Article Abstract:

Proposals to keep the Dead Sea from shrinking offer the possibility of producing energy and increasing the availability of fresh water to Israel. A hydroelectric plant could be built between the Red and Dead Seas, fueled by local oil or natural gas, to power desalinization projects. Chemicals from the Dead Sea, which is four times saltier than the Red Sea, could be used as raw materials in the chemical industry. The steam desalinization creates would condense around the Dead Sea's hills, creating rain.
