From Lux Flakes to Marcel Proust

Article Abstract:

Good design always contains an element of humour, according to designer Willie Landels. He grew up in Italy, and began his working life painting scenery at La Scala. This taught him how to achieve strong effects with limited resources. He then worked at advertising agency J. Walter Thompson in London, England, where he learnt how to use typography as an integral part of design. He initially found that design in the UK was very limited, but this changed with the opening of Zeev Aram's furniture shop in the King's Road, London, England, in 1964.

The producer-professor

Article Abstract:

Kenneth S. Goldstein was one of those rare people in the academe who appreciated the humor in what they encountered and be entertained by it, yet still regard it seriously. Such was his attitude toward bawdy songs, which he regarded as part of a cultural construct worth studying. One of his most impressive works is the comparative anthology, 'Unfortunate Rake.' It illustrates how songs reflect the personality of each interpreter as well as the different cultures through which these pass.

Home fires keep burning

Article Abstract:

A dry winter combined with high summer temperatures produced one of the most severe fires in England's peatland area. The fire began on August 25, 1995 in the peat of Thorne Moors, South Yorkshire. It consumed about 400 hectares of peat, undergrowth, and forest before it was controlled on September 7. Dams made of peat were ruined and plans have been made by owner English Nature to replace dams and restore the peatlands.
