The Other ROM: 'Return on Management'

Article Abstract:

Return on management, according to Edward Schleh, is the most important factor in stimulating productivity. Managers and their departments are rewarded for the results they achieve, and information systems should be designed to produce information that supports that concept. Reports should be tailored to the requirements of individual departments. They should include information on all significant results, not just a few, and on all persons involved. This concept requires that information managers understand the details and problems of operations.

Islands of life

Article Abstract:

Skomer, Skokholm, Ramsey and Grassholm are four nature reserves off the west coast of Wales that maintain their unspoiled condition by strict conservation enforcement. The islands are havens for half a dozen bird species as well as seals, rabbits, feral cats and deer. A new installation on Skomer includes an infrared solar- and wind-powered camera linked to a television monitor which allows visitors to view the nocturnal Manx shearwater seabirds. Development plans include restoring stone farm buildings and reintroducing bird species.

Reply to Roberts: cooperation is an outcome, not a mechanism

Article Abstract:

The commentary by Gilbert White on the definition of animal cooperation assumes that cooperation is a mechanism rather than an outcome. Mutualism is a mechanism of simple self-interest. Game theorists believe that cooperation focuses on the economic consequences of an interaction rather than emphasizing its behavioural properties.
