Musseling in

Article Abstract:

Zebra mussels are freshwater mussels that have a deleterious effect on hydroelectric plants and water supply facilities. The rapid dispersal of the mussel has been attributed to the ability of its larvae to attach itself to boats' hulls and drift downstream in rivers. Among the harmful effects of zebra mussels are constriction of pipes and the corrosion of steel and concrete. In addition, they reduce the intake in air conditioning, cooling and heating systems. Some of the means of controlling zebra mussels are speeding the flow of incoming water and forcing air through intake pipes.

Is this renewable renewable?

Article Abstract:

A licensing action by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) threatens the feasibility and profitability of hydropower projects. Using a 1920 law, FERC has ordered the dismantling of Edwards Dam instead of renewing its license and without owner compensation. This move may kill future hydropower plants, eliminating a needed renewable resource.

Drying up

Article Abstract:

The United States derives its 7% of electricity from hydro power. The effect of drought in 2002 on the U.S. energy markets led to the introduction of the 'National Draught Preparedness Act of 2002' in both the U.S. Senate and House.
