Power alchemy: renewable energy from the elements

Article Abstract:

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, which converts sunlight into electricity, has great potential for use by electric utilities. Reducing production costs to four dollars would hasten the acceptance of PV technology by utilities. On the other hand, wind power produced 1,600 MW of electricity annually. Recent research has produced a wind turbine with a variable-speed rotor that catches more energy from the wind. Geothermal power is another alternative energy source that can produce electric power by using underground steam or hot water. It can be readily distributed and is not influenced by the weather.

Lighting design meets energy efficiency

Article Abstract:

The fusion of art with advanced technological innovations could lead to the gradual development of highly-efficient lighting systems. New products, such as the ellipsoidal reflector incandescent lamp and the plug-in lamp compact fluorescent, are being used by lighting designers and engineers alike to devise energy-saving optical illusions and decors. However, most artists still give more priority to the creation of eyecatching lighting effects than to lighting efficiency.
