Rights of passage: new Ramblers' Association chairman Kate Ashbrook will fight to maintain Britain's ancient network of paths

Article Abstract:

Kate Ashbrook, chairman of Britain's Ramblers Association, has attracted media attention in her fight for legislation to stop illegal blockage of countryside paths. Landowners often place barriers on their property's ancient paths, thus preventing the public freedom of access on privately open walkways. Presently, two out of three walkers are unable to complete their hikes, because of fences, walls, and lakes put in their paths. Ashbrook maintains that she is not demanding unrestricted access to private lands, merely the right for walkers to travel the ancient paths, subject to the restrictions of common sense and environmental responsibility.

Sylvia Earle, the American marine biologist, deep-sea explorer and author, believes the Earth is a sensitive marine environment that is being ruined because humans remain ignorant about the ocean's role in supporting all life on the planet. She thinks this ignorance results from increasing human detachment from the natural world. Earle says the situation is still correctable, but every day of delay makes the ecological situation worse. Earle set the current depth record for solo diving in 1979. She has designed submersible research vehicles and was the first woman to be named chief scientist at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Article Abstract:

Tourist maps have been increasingly used as marketing tools by tourist groups, railways and motoring associations in the last few decades, although these have been in use since the Roman and medieval times. Designed to influence travel decisions, tourist maps highlight certain features of a region to attract visitors and thus are more pictorial than standard maps. They often downplay accessibility problems to reduce perceived distance, cost and travel time.
