Snowbound

Article Abstract:

The village of Saariselka is a haven for trekkers and cross-country skiers. Located at the edge of Finland's Urho Kekkonen National Park, Saariselka is the country's premiere yuppie resort because of the high number of affluent young professionals who stay there during the summer and the ski season. It is the only place where skiers can ski literally the whole day during the end of the winter season, when there is 24 hours of daylight. The park offers accommodations, but also allows visitors who want to stay overnight to set up their own tents.

Trouble in paradise

Article Abstract:

Small islands continue to be a favorite destination of tourists. However, although the tourism business can be lucrative, it poses a number of dangers including the degradation of natural resources and the weakening of the islands' cultural identity. Fortunately, small islands are becoming increasingly aware of the need for a sustainable tourist industry, particularly in view of their limited resources, considerable dependence on foreigners and little international political influence.

Stars in its eyes

Article Abstract:

Seoul, South Korea, will co-host the World Cup soccer competition in 2002 with Japan, although the location for the final game is not yet determined. Many South Koreans are avid soccer fans and would prefer that Seoul host the final. Added to this factor is South Korea's centuries-old conflict with Japan, which has invaded twice since the 16th century. One country may host the opening ceremony and the other the final, but the provisions of a possible compromise have not been announced.
