The oil market and international agreements on CO2 emissions

Article Abstract:

Two types of international agreements concerning the CO2 reduction emissions are analyzed. The cost effective agreements are tradeable emission permits and an international tax for CO2. These agreements will consequently affect the fossil fuel market as results show that the type of agreement conditions fossil fuel prices. In markets with imperfect competition, direct regulation of emission quotas lead to higher prices and more efficiency losses than the tax option with the same total emissions.
