Science in the pursuit of peace: the success and future of the ISTC

Article Abstract:

The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) in Moscow, Russia, has made remarkable progress in its efforts to help prevent the proliferation of the science of weapons of mass destruction following the disintegration of the Soviet Union. The ISTC has been successful in keeping weapons scientists from migrating to proliferant or rogue states despite the decline in financial support for Russia's defense research and development program. However, the continued financial assistance of the US and other parties for the center's research efforts is critical to its existence.

The upward surge

Article Abstract:

The great fire in Chicago in 1871 destroyed all office buildings made of wood. The first skyscraper was built during the reconstruction of the city to answer the need for a fire-resistant building. Architects of the day also wanted a design that would make maximum use of available land. To build the ideal structure, they employed new technologies that permitted them to build higher instead of larger buildings. Architects used the emerging electric power transmission technology to realize a useful skyscraper.
