The voice of reason

Article Abstract:

China's vast population and slowly increasing prosperity will likely drive up prices for the world's food supply while decreasing its availability. Nearly two centuries ago, Britain averted famine by improved agricultural methods and emigration to America. Similar pressures exist currently, but the Earth's population is growing faster than agriculture can improve. Unless governments drastically intervene in reproductive rates, many countries will find themselves unable to support their populations in the near future.

Crofters' original idea

Article Abstract:

Land managers in northern Scotland may be able to obtain better information on natural resources through the use of the Internet. The land managers, known as crofters, are seeking to improve the surrounding community's quality of life through better management of natural resources. Some crofters are learning to tap the Internet for environmental information and make the information useful to others. The European Union has funded crofters' research on alternative energy such as hydroelectric power.
