Top IOUS ranked

Article Abstract:

Electric Light & Power Magazine's 1997 annual list of largest investor-owned utilities ranks IOUs based on total revenues. Enron Corp. is ranked first among IOUs in the US, reporting revenue of $20,273,000, followed by Duke Energy Corp. with $16,308,900, then PG&E Corp. with $15,400,000. The US energy industry also saw the completion of 11 merger deals in 1997 and five others in early 1998, a trend that continues to reduce the number of IOUs in the US. Energy companies in the US also saw their revenues increase in 1997 brought largely by the growth in sales from wholesale energy marketing activities.

San Juan shaves costs from FGD retrofit

Article Abstract:

Public Service Company of New Mexico's (PNM) San Juan Generating Station (SJGS), which is run by PNM for the plant's nine owners, has seen cost improvements resulting from its installation of a retrofit for its flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system. Following a study employing the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) FGD Cost Model, PNM decided to install a limestone forced oxidation (LSFO) FGD at the power plant. The LSFO FGD effected improvements in terms of operation and maintenance costs as well as increasing savings from energy expenses.
