Wild Western

Article Abstract:

David Western states that he is attempting to deal with the larger political issues and demonstrate concern for both the wildlife and people in Kenya as head of the Kenya Wildlife Service. After commissioning a study on the conflicts between Kenyans and wildlife, he is developing 'legal wildlife enterprises' that will give people living outside parks the right to manage local wildlife to produce income. He believes this program will help to prevent the damage caused by wild animals that stray out of parks.

Burning desirables

Article Abstract:

Deciding which camp stove to purchase depends on individual needs and the type of camping or exploration one is planning. The Explorer and Optimus brands are sturdy and heat quickly if controlled properly, while the MSR Whisperlite Internationale 600 is compact and easy to manage. The Coleman Super Backpacking stove is easy to use, but requires special cylinders. The Siggs Fire Jet stove did not rate well, but the Siggs cooking pan is an ideal size for individual campers and heats evenly.

The wild dogs of Africa

Article Abstract:

The painted hunting dog once roamed over most of Africa but is now the second most endangered species on the continent. There are only about 3,000 left. The public thinks of the dogs as cruel and vicious, but they are intelligent and gentle and there is a social bond among them. Gregory Rasmussen is trying to conserve the species in Zimbabwe. Efforts include a data base and collars on the dogs for radio-tracking.
