Disclosing apoptosis in the CNS

Article Abstract:

The Italian Society of Immunology hosted on Sept 18, 1998, a conference that was devoted to research on the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis in the central nervous system. Attended by some 200 delegates from the academe and industry, the conference attracted contributions from scientists from a number of European research centers. The first part of the conference was devoted to the basic mechanisms of apoptosis while the second part focused on the modulation of apoptosis by neurotransmitters. The third and final part looked at the link between apoptosis and neuropathologies.

Neuronal cell death: a demise with different shapes

Article Abstract:

Scientists have yet to be determine convincingly if apoptosis or necrosis prevails in acute and slowly developing neurodegenerative disorders. The debate on the issue can be resolved by considering that different types of cell death within a tissue reflect the complete or partial execution of a common death program. Cell death by apoptosis or necrosis can also be assessed through morphological criteria. Programmed cell death often leads to a morphology related to apoptosis.

Mechanism of tetanus toxin in neuronal cell death

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of tetanus toxin on the mammalian central nervous sytem. Results showed that the toxin caused neuronal degeneration seven days after the toxin was injected to the hippocampus. These results are misleading and failed to differentiate neuronal inhibition from neuronal death. They also failed to provide enough evidences to characterize the effects of different doses of tetanus toxin on the nervous system.
