GERMANY: CHEMICALS INDUSTRY OPTIMISTIC

Article Abstract:

According to Manfred Schneider, chairman of Bayer AG and president of the industry association VCI, the German chemicals industry is optimistic for year 2001. Production might grow 3% and turnover by 6-7%. Profits are likely to remain satisfactory on the average. In year 2000 the industry saw a 3% increase in production and a more than 12% growth in turnover to DM 213.3bn. Despite a slowdown towards the end of the year, exports grew 13% to DM 142.7bn. Due to increased raw material costs, producer prices rose by 4.8% in year 2000. This resulted in a fall in profits in some cases, but profitability on the whole remained satisfactory.

Germany: Chemetall bonding agents to Rohm & Haas

Article Abstract:

Rohm and Haas of Philadelphia has taken over the metal-rubber bonding agents business of German Chemetall GmbH, strengthening its position as number two in the market. The deal, the terms of which were not disclosed, is seen against the background of concentration in the main application market, the automotive industry. In the financial year 2000/01 the metal-rubber bonding agents division of Chemetall generated a turnover in the double-digit million euro range.
