Hermann Blaschko (1900-1993)

Article Abstract:

Hermann Blaschko is known for his discovery of the correct pathway for the synthesis of adrenaline from tyrosine in 1939. This paved the way for introduction of drugs for the treatment of psychosis and Parkinson's disease. Blaschko and colleague Arnold Welch then discovered that adrenaline was stored in cells in the chromaffin granule which explained the storage of hormones and neurotransmitters in synaptic vesicles. Aside from these medically-relevant discoveries, Blaschko was known for his kindness and friendly disposition. He passed away in Oxford on Apr 18, 1993. He was 93.

One good turn: how machine-made screws brouth the world together

Article Abstract:

The industrial revolution may not have occurred as soon as it did had not the wood screw been invented. Wood screws were created during the 16th century. Screwdrivers were called turn-screws and carpenters starting carrying them after 1800. Screws were expensive because they were made by hand. Wood screws are stonger and more durable than nails, pegs or staples.
