Article Abstract:

The Cambridge Healthtech Institute conducted a conference in Monaco on the use of information being produced by the Human Genome Project. The focus of the speakers' reports was on genomics. Genomics is important in the formulation of effective drugs since it provides information on the nature of diseases as well as information on the effects of the drugs. Stephen Peroutka emphasized the necessity of genomics in fully enhancing the efficacy of drugs in the market. Peroutka claims that 100 phenotypes are being used to determine new uses for drugs presently approved.

Involvement of T cells in drug-induced allergies

Article Abstract:

The direct metabolism-independent T-cell stimulation model has been proposed to explain the involvement of T cells in allergies induced by drugs. It theorizes that drug-binding to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-peptide complex on the antigen presenting cells (APCs) and T-cell receptor is similar to drug binding in other receptors. The model is based on several findings such as the T cell drug recognition's dependence on the presence of MHC-matched APCs and that T cells recognize the specific antigen by their T-cell receptor.
