Neurone development and death, from a cell biologist's perspective

Article Abstract:

The 37th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology was held in Dec 1997 in Washington, DC. The meeting mostly focused on the neurosciences, particularly on the functions of neurons and how they establish their identities in the adult brain. Related topics discussed were complexities affecting neural development, cell biology of neurodegenerative diseases and the isolation of new genes for neuron developmental processes. Several speakers were featured in the meeting which include C. Shatz of the University of California, Berkeley, and T. Jessell of Columbia University.

Cell death by apoptosis and its protective role against disease

Article Abstract:

The occurrence of apoptosis during cell death has proven to be important in tissue growth, organ involution and tumor development. This form of cell elimination can be induced or inhibited by various compounds including endogenous factors such as transforming growth factor beta1 and retinoids. Furthermore, certain diseases such as hepatitis, liver tumors and human lymphatic leukemia have been found to respond to treatments involving apoptosis-like cell death. In addition, recent studies suggest that apoptosis can be genetically transferred.

Proteases: from fertilization to cell death

Article Abstract:

Participants at the International Symposium on Proteases in Canada in June, 2000, discussed research on the diverse proteases that share common mechanisms. Research on proteases has gone beyond structure and activity and now focuses on their role in health and disease.
