Pharmacological prospects for alpha2-adrenoceptor antagonist therapy

Article Abstract:

Alpha2-adrenoceptors mediate various general physiological functions by regulating interaction by the components of the autonomic nervous system. However, present pharmacological trends are focusing on the probable therapeutic value of alpha2-adrenoceptor antagonists. Such agents are noted to produce tonic and anti-depressive effects by enhancing noradrenalin release. It has also been noted to regulate cutaneous blood flow, the release of renin and insulin secretion. The effects however, are inconsistent for nerve mechanisms and future studies must consider increasing its selectivity.

On the presence of a putative fourth beta-adrenoceptor in human adipose tissue

Article Abstract:

The presence of beta-3-adrenoceptor in human adipose tissue has not been clearly established while its existence has been demonstrated in rodent white fat cells. The evidence of a beta-3-adrenoceptor in human fat cells is based only on the effect of a nonconventional partial agonist CGP12177. Research results indicate that only an interaction between CGP12177 and a putative beta-4-adrenoceptor can activate lipolysis in fat cells. Thus, the presence of the two subtypes of beta-adrenoceptor in rat fat cells and the putative beta-4-adrenoceptor in human fat cells is established.

Application of in situ microdialysis to measure metabolic and vascular responses in adipose tissue

Article Abstract:

An in situ approach to the exploration of adipose tissue function has been developed. The microdialysis technique has been used to investigate regional adipose tissue metabolism based on local uptake of endogenous metabolites by adipocytes, to estimate local adipose tissue blood flow and to determine local responses of adipose tissue to functional challenges. The measurements are obtained through microdialysis probes which are implanted deep within the adipose tissue. The probes are later characterized by the assessment of their recovery in vitro.
