Physiological basis of multicompartmental models of drug distribution

Article Abstract:

Pharmacokinetic analysis of drug distribution using multicompartmental models show that physiological factors such as protein binding, body fluid spaces and transcapillary exchange influenced drug concentration in the body. Sample studies involving theophylline and insulin provided clearer understanding of drug distribution in relation to time and course of administration. In addition, hemodialysis was found to increase drug elimination resulting in lower compartmental drug concentrations.

The genetic basis of malignant hyperthermia

Article Abstract:

The ryanodine receptor (RYR1) gene has been observed to cause malignant hyperthermia susceptibility in all pig species and in some human families. The causative property of RYR1 can be traced from the substitution of Cys for Arg615 in the amino acid sequence of the gene. This mutation can account for most of the malignant hyperthermia cases in over 450 pigs in six breeds and in a single human family of five members. The study has been conducted using halothane/caffeine contracture tests.

Experimental headache models in animals and humans

Article Abstract:

A symposium on experimental headache models in animals and humans was held. The models for inducing headache are expected to offer patho-physiological data in the search for effective treatments for migraine and other types of primary headaches. The symposium topics include general use of models in drug development, models of non-migrainous headaches, discovering migraine mechanisms from animal experiments and human models of vascular headache.
