SWITZERLAND: NOVARTIS SCIENTIFIC SERVICE SPINOFF

Article Abstract:

The Swiss chemicals group Novartis is hiving off its scientific services operations with effect from 1 October 1999. The new Basle-based company called Solvias AG is owned almost 50% by the management, which was supported by Novartis Venture Fund. Solvias will offer services increasingly to clients outside the Novartis group, although Novartis and Ciba Spezialitatenchemie will remain the main clients. Currently business with third parties accounts for about one-third of the turnover that should be around SFr 35mn-40mn. In regional terms, Solvias' focus will be on Europe. Solvias spends about 10% of turnover on R&D, with the main targets being catalysis, synthesis, surface characterisation, on-line spectroscopy and new analytic methods.
