Article Abstract:

East German Freiberg-based Freiberger Compound Materials (FCM), which is owned by Federmann Enterprises Ltd of Israel, has presented the world's first monocrystal 200-mm gallium arsenide wafer. By 2002 FCM, which claims more than 20% of the world market for GaAs wafers, is to more than double production volume in a DM 100mn investment programme. The first phase of the new production plant Fab 2 is to become operational in the second quarter of 2001, producing mainly 150-mm wafers in the LEC process. By 2002, the plant should employ more than 300 staff and generate a turnover of about DM 200mn. In the current financial year, turnover is estimated at DM 90mn-100mn.

Germany: FCM cuts staff

Article Abstract:

Freiberger Compound Materials (FCM), German producer of GaAs wafers, is to reduce the number of staff by 50 from 231 at present. In view of the adverse development of the gallium arsenide segment and of the mobile phone markets, FCM is believed to be betting on indium phosphide as a new product line. In 2000 FCM, which is controlled by Federmann Enterprises Ltd of Israel, generated a turnover of DM 95mn. It has completed phase I of a DM 100mn investment programme running until 2002.
