The new belief that the stratum corneum (SC) is not inert and modulates enzymic activities in the upper layers of the skin is discussed. A newly published book, "Dry Skin and Moisturizers, Chemistry and Function," is reviewed.

Article Abstract:

A review of technical reports pertinent to the development of toiletry and cosmetic products is presented. Kimberly-Clark has disclosed formulations for surfactant- and fatty-acid-containing waterless hand cleaners. Funasaka has found vitamin E, particularly when combined with vitamin C, to be effective as a treatment for facial hyperpigmentation. Other reports are discussed.
