Aftercare for participants in clinical research: ethical considerations in an asthma drug trial

Article Abstract:

Examination of aftercare for patients participating in an asthma drug trial suggests that limited responsibility might feasibly be taken by clinical investigators for medical care after clinical trials, especially in countries such as Australia that have universal health coverage. However, the ethical implications of this issue need to be clarified. Society may have a moral responsibility towards persons who are taking the risk of being research subjects for the benefit of society. However, the prospect of aftercare may create an inducement to volunteer that would be morally and scientifically undesirable.

Chinese Confucian culture and the medical ethical tradition

Article Abstract:

Confucian culture provides a sound basis for medical ethics in China, but one that needs to be adapted to keep pace with the development of modern medicine. Traditional principles of medical ethics based on Confucianism include appreciation for the value of life, care for the suffering of patients, improvement of skills and prevention of carelessness, decorousness, equal treatment for all patients, and respect for others' achievements. The historical and class limitations of Confucian culture should be discarded.

Research on the human genome and patentability - the ethical consequences

Article Abstract:

The genome should not be made sole property as it is a chemical product, responsible for transferring hereditary characters, giving identity to the individual. However, inventive processes involving human ingenuity should be patented and gene descriptions given protection as intellectual property. Additionally, commercialization and utilisation of the resulting product should be subjected to ethical consideration.
