Decision-making processes on ethical issues: the impact of a social contract perspective

Article Abstract:

Study of selected students and salespeople, using situational variables, found that the views and perception of the two groups differ on what constitutes an ethical act and situational factors influence the decision making about ethical acts. Results were similar to the findings of Zey-Ferrel and Weaver, 1979. An individual will be more sensitive to his community's social norms than a non community person. Social contract approach is an effective tool for analyzing ethical behaviour.

Fairness of pricing decisions

Article Abstract:

The pricing policies of 300 fast-food restaurants in the predominantly black neighborhoods of New Jersey and Pennsylvania are examined. Results indicate that high-pricing is prevalent in the restaurants surveyed, which was found to be neither motivated by competition nor by overhead costs. It was also observed that franchisees are more likely to charge higher prices than company-owned restaurants.

Lying: the impact of decision context

Article Abstract:

Issues related to the ethical aspects of lying by salespersons are examined. Topics include the situations in which salespersons are more and less willing to lie, factors that impact a willingness to lie, and steps businesses can take to improve ethical behavior.
