Doing the right thing in cross-cultural representation

Article Abstract:

The recent rise of self-consciousness and representational anxiety in anthropology stems from an awareness of the field's traditional involvement in colonialism and from the development of a multicultural audience. Those represented are now responding to and contesting their representations. However, it is doubtful that aesthetic concerns with representation are enough to correct the inherent asymmetry in cross-cultural representation. The power imbalance may be corrected by enlarging the conversation through a form of multicultural universalism in which all can take part.

The right to genetic ignorance confirmed

Article Abstract:

The right to genetic knowledge about oneself is self-evident, but in liberal societies, the right to remain in ignorance should be assured if no other person will be harmed. Self-determination and autonomy seem, within liberal traditions, to assure to an individual the right to all knowledge available about himself or herself. Two arguments against the right to ignorance are given: that that harm to others may occur and that that comes from the Kantian perspective, that hurting oneself should not be allowed.

What is this thing called "reputation"?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine reputation which game theorists use to demonstrate the rationality of cooperative behavior in certain contexts. In ordinary contexts, reputation may be reflective of character, something that does is not well suited to contemporary rational choice theory. However, the concept does not provide a clear explanation of what it really means to develop a reputation for cooperation in some contexts.
