Genetic Catch-22: testing, risk and private health insurance

Article Abstract:

There is growing concern about life and health insurance companies using genetic information to impose higher premiums on people deemed to be at greater genetic risk. Insurers are now in a very difficult situation, whether they decide to use genetic information or not. If insurers are not permitted access to genetic testing information for risk-rating and underwriting, then the pressure of adverse selection will cause the whole system of health funding to collapse. However, if insurers use genetic information to exclude those at high risk, then a genetic underclass emerges and the health care system is placed in danger.

Differences in moral reasoning between college and university business majors and non-business majors

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine whether there are any detectable differences between the moral reasoning of business graduates and non-business graduates. Findings indicated that there are no statistically significant differences between the moral reasoning of business graduates and non-business graduates. This study was conducted due to the perception that business schools have a very narrow and technical curriculum which focuses only on quantitative procedures and neglects the qualitative and ethical issues.

Moral truthfulness in genetic counseling

Article Abstract:

The necessary characteristics of genetic counselors' moral responsibility are described. These include frankness in discussing abortion, care in discussing disability and moral truthfulness concerning claims to genetics knowledge. The last characteristic is sufficient for the first two and also functions as a moderating constraint on them. Therefore, moral truthfulness is vital to genetic counseling responsibility and should be at the heart of accountability requirements from genetic counselors.
