The challenges of combining social and commercial enterprise

Article Abstract:

A comparison of nonprofit and for-profit business organizations at a time when business is considered the model of efficiency and innovation provides significant insights into the norms that characterize these institutions, their functions in society and the viability of combining commercial methods with social objectives. Once bitten: defection and reconciliation in a cooperative enterprise

Article Abstract:

An experimental approach for evaluating the possibility of reconciliation is described. A preliminary model used a repeated prisoner's dilemma to gain an insight into the impact of three broad determinants of reconciliation, namely, the nature of the defector's penance, the nature of the relationship and the nature of the breakdown. Results indicate that the urge to forgive was strong and that penitence need not match the cost of the wrong.

Positive rights and the problems of social justice

Article Abstract:

Alan Gewirth's book entitled 'The Community of Rights' was reviewed. The books discusses the popular social issues that include company downsizing, fear of unemployment, homelessness and welfare. Gewirth believes that these social problems persist because Western political democracies, like the US, did not provide enough positive rights to their constituents to practice freedom and well being to be involved in voluntary purposive action.
