Terms of agreement

Article Abstract:

Margaret Gilbert has argued that agreements cannot be regarded as exchanges of promises. However, her argument is based on a limited view of exchange as involving a sequence of promises. A fuller concept of exchange, based on the analogy of an exchange of property, does suggest the sense in which an agreement can be construed as an exchange of promises. The offer-acceptance model shows how an agreement can be based on an exchange of promises while satisfying the criteria of simultaneity and interdependence discussed by Gilbert.
