The moral significance of primitive self-consciousness: a response to Bermudez

Article Abstract:

Close-to-term fetuses may also have a primitive form of self-consciousness. The possibility that they can possess the moral significance associated with primitive self-consciousness is consistent with Jose Luis Bermudez's argument on the moral significance of birth. His three features of primitive self-consciousness are a primitive body image, a distinction between self and other, and acknowledgment that the other is of the same kind as oneself.

Moral institutions, cognitive psychology, and the harming-versus-not-aiding distinction

Article Abstract:

Cognitive psychology can help illuminate the questions of moral philosophy. The situation of harm-versus-not-aid is significantly different from loss-versus-no-gain, especially since people tend to regard changes rather than end states as "bearers of utility." Normative theory based on the loss-versus-no-gain model does not account for situations where people tolerate loss for the sake of greater gain.
