A friend in need: Kiev woos Washington

Article Abstract:

The Ukraine is of key importance to Western security. Under Pres Leonid Kuchma, the country has pro-European leanings. Russia considers the borders with other members of the Commonwealth of Independent Nations to be purely administrative. If the Ukraine agreed to join a Russian-led bloc for military and political purposes, the West could face a new Cold War and have to return to greater defense spending. Measures the West could take to prevent this from happening are detailed.

Turkey's AKP: A model 'Muslim-democratic' party?

Article Abstract:

Turkey's post-Islamic Justice and Development Party (AKP) is trying to head the consolidation of liberal democracy in Turkey and to become the world's leading model of a Muslim democratic party. The AKP's success is seen as one important step that allows Turkey to imbue its democratic procedures with liberal practices by addressing one of its arguably most pressing\g issues including the public role of Islam.

The opposition's road to success

Article Abstract:

Ukraine's opposition had held well-organized antiregime protests that drew impressive crowds, to end the semi-authoritarian rule of President Leonid Kuchma. The reasons for the massive outrage that was initiated by the opposition are described along with the history of Ukraine's opposition.
