Selection of commercial bank CEOs in the deregulated environment: influencing factors

Article Abstract:

A national survey of 410 commercial bank chief executive officers (CEOs) was conducted to assess the impact of deregulation on the criteria that govern selection of CEOs in the US banking industry. Most of the newly-appointed CEOs believe their ability to manage and motivate, and their communication skills, are largely responsible for their selection when compared with tenured officers of more than ten years' experience. The results suggest a decreasing importance of accounting and financial skills in the era of deregulation.

The program is found to be fairly successful in the implementation of determinants and that the agency's pay program could be utilized as benchmark for other government agencies wishing to implement a similar program.
