All change

Article Abstract:

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who will stand down in September 2006, was the first Japanese prime minister since Nakasone in 1980s to show a style of leadership and engagement with the Japanese people, the media and also the US that suggested a change in political style. The result of the forthcoming leadership contest would decide whether Japan would slip back into the shadows as it did into the late 1980s, or whether it has really changed.
