"Angel Street' & the bedevilment of blacks on the tube

Article Abstract:

Prime-time television shows have not been effective in building a positive image of Blacks in the US despite the large number of black performers, directors and managers. Only a handful of shows have exerted an effort to present an image of Blacks different from the singers, dancers and servant roles that are most often given to Blacks. Notable among these shows are 'Frank's Place' and 'Equal Justice' for their realistic depiction of Blacks from the Black perspective. Television programmers should reorient their policies given the growing importance of Blacks as consumers.

President George Bush's policy on Haitians is indefensible, cruel racism

Article Abstract:

US Pres George Bush repatriated Haitian refugees on the premise that they were not in any significant danger in their own country. The danger exists and the order is seen as a case of racism because these refugees have nothing with which to exchange for asylum. Dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham's support for this point of view was manifest when she went on a hunger strike to protest of the Haitian policy. Bush is accused of violating the democratic principles he claims he holds and is urged to reverse the orders and to keep hundreds of Haitians from certain death.

2,000 demonstrators in front of the White House assail Bush policy on Haitian repatriation

Article Abstract:

US Pres George Bush's immigration policy which permits the forced return of Haitian refugees to their country has incurred the wrath of 2,000 demonstratorswho staged a rally in front of the White House. Former world tennis champion Arthur Ashe, together with officials of NAACP and TransAfrica and thousands of demonstrators demanded a thorough screening and court hearing for the refugees before they could be repatriated. However, the administration maintains that the refugees were sent back because they were migrating for economic rather than political reasons.
