Antidumping reform in the United States: a faded sunset

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to examine the way in which the United States has decided to incorporate certain provisions of the Antidumping Agreement (ADA) into US law. The ADA codified most of the existing system as applied in traditional user countries. However, the resulting system may set a troubling precedent for countries that are newly using antidumping measures. Findings have indicated that the new antidumping measures may closely resemble a type of safeguard action rather than protection against unfair importation policies.

Antidumping laws in the United States; use and welfare consequences

Article Abstract:

Analysis of eight antidumping duties imposed by the US between 1989 and 1990 shows that these duties are a very expensive way of improving US profitability and increasing the numbers of US jobs. The eight duties considered were on salmon from Norway, sparklers from China, lug nuts from China and Taiwan, silicon metal from Argentina, Brazil and China and cement from Mexico. For each dollar of increased profits, the cost to the consumer averaged $8.00. The cost to the economy per dollar of increased profit averaged $3.60.
