Colombia and the drugs barons: conflict and containment

Article Abstract:

The Colombian government has achieved only limited success in its war against the guerrillas and drug cartels, which along with political instability has resulted in public mistrust of the government. The state's reputation for incompetence and corruption and social policies which compound the differences between the classes have also led the public to feel alienated from the government. Government policies which stress pacification by the military without social reform will exacerbate the divisions between social classes. If insufficient attention is paid to social problems, political instability will grow worse.

Narcocassettes jeopardise a president

Article Abstract:

A narcotics scandal has embroiled Colombian Pres Ernesto Samper, and led to further political upheavals. The president has been accused of using drug money to finance his campaign in 1994. Congressional investigations and moves for impeachment have resulted. Relations with the United States have also been dampened, and the US has decertified Colombia on drug control cooperation. Various opponents of Samper are also maneuvering for advantage, and he may have to resign office even if he is cleared by Congress.

Human security: Development, containment and re-territorialization

Article Abstract:

The development, containment and re-territorialization of the human security are the widening of security concerns beyond those of states to include the needs and well-being of people including biopolitics and geopolitics. The process of re-territorialization has demanded new forms of centralization, including transforming NGO's into the role of state auxiliaries, and the securitization of aid has created openings for new actors and opportunities for wider privatization.
