Belarus: Learning from defeat

Article Abstract:

The Belarusian presidential election of March 2006 appeared to be an exercise in meaninglessness since the incumbent president Alyaksandr Lukashenka had taken steps to guarantee that he would not lose. While the protests by the opposition against manipulation by the Lukashenka regime seemed futile, the empty election provoked an upsurge in civic activism and the outburst of political protest that the opposition campaign called forth offers reason to take heart.

Article Abstract:

The advantages and disadvantages of the two dominant democratic regime types, presidentialism and parliamentalism during the 'third wave' of democratization are discussed. Semipresidential systems that have both a directly elected president and a prime minister responsible to the legislature is a very popular choice of government for countries that democratized during or after the third wave.

Does diversity hurt democracy?

Homogenous society is an advantage when it comes to democratization is claimed. The way in which this suggestion be empirically tested, with the help of what results are discussed.
