Beyond hero worship: a Marxist critique of Bolshevik terror and its indebtedness to Jacobinism

Article Abstract:

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels offer a Marxist critique of Bolshevik terror which derives from the old Jacobin reign of terror practiced during the French revolution. Bolshevik terror sought to initiate a socialist revolution through forceful dictatorship of the masses by the select few. Proletarian terror as employed by Lenin witnessed the arming of the masses and the judiciary to force the bourgeoisie into compliance with the law. The Jacobins legacy of terror adopted by the Bolsheviks deviates from Rousseau's concept of socialism which focuses on virtue and collective will in state building.

Communism in a capitalist world: the classic Marxist theoretical perspective

Article Abstract:

Karl Marx and Frederick Engels claimed in "The German Ideology" published in 1845-46 that communism could only be effective if conducted on an international scale. The failure of classic Marxism has thus, been caused by capitalism, in particular US capitalism. Worldwide communism could potentially solve economic, environmental and social problems as proven by the historic achievements of communism in China and Russia. Achievements include: the eradication of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy; the redistribution of wealth; inexpensive social welfare and war avoidance.
