Breaking the taboo on drugs

Article Abstract:

Illegal drug trafficking is increasing, accounting for about 8% of all international trade. Attempts to control the traffic appear to be failing, despite strong public support for such activities. Many believe that control efforts lack effective international cooperation and fail to address the drug trade's underlying economic causes. A diverse group of social workers, economists, physicians and other experts assert that the legalization of many illicit drugs would make the problem more manageable and easier to control. Politicians, however, appear afraid to raise the issue and risk adverse public reaction.

Women's rights and wrongs

Article Abstract:

International organizations providing essential humanitarian aid in Afghanistan should not suspend their operations to protest human rights violations by the fundamentalist group Taliban that now controls 75% of the country. Taliban's policy of closing girls' schools and dismissing women who are employed outside the home caused high officials at aid organizations to threaten suspension of their programs. Such threats have no impact on Taliban, which views these complaints as a very low priority. Suspending programs that provide essential aid would harm only those who need assistance.

Principles clash in Afghanistan

Article Abstract:

The United Nations is organizing a team of negotiators to meet the Taliban to discuss ways in which the international community can assist Afghanistan's poor with basic essentials. The population of Afghanistan over the years has become increasingly dependent on western aid to fund basic social services. The Taliban have been criticized by the international community and muslim scholars for imposing restrictions on dress codes, entertainment, and personal appearance.
