Article Abstract:

The UK needs to remain a central player in the European Union. Withdrawing from the single European market or seeking a shrunken role within it would harm British interests by raising prices on goods, dampening investment and destabilizing the economy. European leadership, which could and should include a strong British component, needs to focus in on the challenges facing the Union, including expanding its membership to include Europe's fledgling democracies, completing the process of single market integration, increasing economic competitiveness, and ensuring the success of the European Monetary Union.

Changing partners or a closer union?

Article Abstract:

Only the future will show the sincerity and depth of promises made by the newly formed British government to improve relationships with the European Union (EU). Preliminary negotiations have shown promise that Britain will be faithful despite historical evidence to the contrary. Internal cooperation may aid in balancing the challenges faced domestically, within the EU, and abroad. Forums in place within the British Commonwealth may be a good resource for developing human rights' policies.
