Japan and the United States - a European perspective

Article Abstract:

European observers of US-Japan relations are troubled by America's alarmist reaction to Japan's economic success and by Japan's failure to mature politically. Growing interdependence among the G7 nations requires that protectionist trade policies be dropped and the GATT system strengthened. Some structure for coordinating macroeconomic policy must replace the collapsed Bretton Woods system. Further, Japan must assume a more active foreign policy if it is to further democratic goals in Asia and elsewhere. The burden of defence should also be shared more equally among the US, Japan and Europe.
