Capitulate or escalate

Article Abstract:

The US and Iran are heading towards an inevitable confrontation, and without a huge European diplomatic effort to defuse the situation and prevent a collision, an apocalyptic crash appears imminent. The choice for the US in the wake of the 2006 Israel-Lebanon war lies between capitulation with the help of Syria or a military escalation or attack on Iran, and both options could have serious consequences.

Topics addressed include Lebanon's demand for Israel's unconditional withdrawal from its territory, Lebanon's linkage with Syrian policy, and Syria's military action against Israel which risks Israeli compliance with Lebanon's demands.

The after effects of the wars produce a basic re-evaluation of values and principles. While, the regime of Saddam Hussein managed to survive the rise of Islamic ideas and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States is in conflict with the tendencies of the Middle East.
