China, Russia plan to go ahead with nuclear reactor sales to Iran

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has failed to convince China and Russia to reconsider the sale of nuclear technology to Iran. Both countries refused to give in to the US government's plea, despite being offered classified intelligence information showing Iran's intention to use the technology to develop nuclear arms. However, China and Russia did promise to establish bilateral working-level groups to pursue negotiations with the US. Moreover, China has pledged that the nuclear reactors to be sold to Iran will be placed under UN Atomic Energy Agency.

United states and EURATOM strike new 35-year nuclear accord

Article Abstract:

EURATOM and the United States have agreed to a 35-year nuclear cooperation in the trade of nuclear fuel and technologies. EURATOM is to get access to the US for the enrichment, reprocessing, and re-transfer of nuclear fuels. The new accord empowers the US to restrain its endorsement for these nuclear activities if it poses a threat to its security. Some interim steps are proposed for the continuation of trade until the new agreements come into effect.
