Circular on issues concerning the intensification of supervision over medical wastewater and medical waste substances during the period of SARS prevention and treatment

Article Abstract:

A State Administration for Environmental Protection circular dated April 27, 2003, establishes monitoring priorities during the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) period that requires local environment protection agencies to focus on the medical wastewater treatment capacity of hospitals with intake and treatment of SARS cases. It permits the treatment of medical wastewater by adding chlorine for disinfection and authorizes the incineration of medical garbage on the hospital site.

Xinhua news dispatch: Hu Jintao on SARS and its prevention in the future

Article Abstract:

The President of China, Hu Jintao expressed his views in regards to the threat of SARS at his first press conference with the international media, at the end of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. He said it is his duty to Chinese people and to the rest of the world to stop the spread of the pneumonia-like disease, which has victimized China accounting for 349 fatalities and 5,327 infections.

The statement of the Special ASEAN-China Leaders Meeting on SARS is discussed that focuses on the decisions of the ASEAN leaders about their readiness to cooperate in all ways to help China fight the SARS problem. The importance of strong leadership, political commitment, multisectoral collaboration and partnership at the national and regional levels is emphasized to fight the epidemic.
