Democracy and ethnic diversity: a new international priority?

Article Abstract:

Democracy is an essential element of protecting civil rights and especially the rights of minorities, as it makes assumptions that give minorities an equal standing. It alone is not sufficient to prevent conflict that can threaten a state's or a region's stability, however, and international institutions have a vital role to play. This is especially true in areas where minorities are now repressed, or where nationalist demands are building toward secession. The world cannot afford all 2000 nations a state.

With us or against us

Article Abstract:

The US launched its anti-terrorist war in Afghanistan in the name of 'Enduring Freedom' in an effort to consolidate security, build democratic government and develop the country economically. US and its allies might bestow the military and economic largesse necessary to build democratic institutions, promote liberal education and economic development for at least a generation as democracy is the only antidote to terrorism and its take-off in Afghanistan has great international significance.
