Democratic institutions and performance

Article Abstract:

Iraq remains a divided society even after the huge success in the elections held on 30 January 2005 and it is explained that democracy did not create these divisions. The answer of whether Iraq will go up the rising path of democracy or down the falling road of division may lie in the bargaining, arguing, and political deal-making that are going on in Iraq in the present time of transition.

Iraq's year of voting dangerously

Article Abstract:

Iraq's three elections in 2005 highlighted the role, and the limits, of electoral-system design in managing potentially polarizing divisions. The ability of the parties and politicians to manage and mitigate the polarization, through negotiation and compromise, will likely determine not only the scope for democratic development but also even Iraq's ability to survive as one country.
