Diplomacy in orbit

Article Abstract:

Russian cooperation in the international space station project has run into financial snags that could delay the station's deployment until Oct 1998. The US granted Russia an unprecedented full partnership in the program in Dec 1993, something which was never offered to its other partners, the European Space Agency, Canada and Japan. The US structured earlier international cooperation in the project so that its progress would not depend upon the efforts of any other nation. The agreement has successfully maintained Russia's space industry and increased its commercial ties to the West.

Nuclear waste seeks good home

Article Abstract:

The planned permanent radioactive waste disposal site at Yucca Mountain, NV will probably not be ready to receive waste until 2013, even if existing political and environmental controversies over the site are somehow settled. Congress has proposed that a temporary radioactive waste dump, where spent nuclear fuel from US commercial reactors would be stored in sealed containers aboveground, be established at the dormant Nevada Nuclear Test Site, adjacent to Yucca Mountain. President Clinton opposes establishing a temporary site before the permanent site's feasibility is determined.
