Doing less for the hungry

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the implications of "The State of Food Security in the World" report published by the Food and Agriculture Organisation in October 2002, which revealed that fewer people are being helped to escape from hunger than had been previously believed. The report states that during the 1990s, the decrease in people worldwide suffering from hunger was 2.5 mil/yr, far lower than the 6 mil/yr that had been previously believed, leaving the current global number of hungry people at 799 mil. Whether or not there is a global commitment to accelerate the rate at which hunger is reduced is examined.

Sheep in wolves' clothing

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the apparent rise in popularity of right-wing parties in Europe in recent times and their failure to make any significant impact on the general political system. It is argued that the routing of right-wing parties such as the Freedom party in the Austrian general election in November 2002, and the implosion of right-wing leaders such as the Netherlands' Lijst Pim Fortuyn in September 2002, suggest that while it is right to be concerned about the growth of right-wing parties, they will remain a largely insignificant part of the political system in Europe.
