Economic austerity and the Peruvian crisis: the social cost of autocracy

Article Abstract:

An evaluation of the socio-political situation in Peru under the regime of Pres Alberto Fujimori is discussed. Moves by Fujimori to maintain political stability through the implementation of authoritarian rule has resulted in a host of socio-economic problems. Observers indicate that the restoration of political democracy will pave the way for the integration of Peru into the international financial community and lead to economic stability.

A new threat of terror in the Western hemisphere

Article Abstract:

Peru's victory over terrorism was due to improved police intelligence and increased public investment. However in relation to Peru's re-emergent terrorist threat, the United States should pursue a strategy of investing in Peru's economy and institutions and should not strengthen counternarcotics operations.

Democratic dictators: authoritarian politics in Peru from Leguia to Fujimori

Article Abstract:

This article examines the dictatorship of Alberto Fujimori and Peruvian history. The author, maintaining scholars have incorrectly compared Fujimori's presidency with Asian politics, argues that the Japanese-Peruvian president's political strategy comes straight out of Peru's history.
