Essay: lies and law

Article Abstract:

Bill Clinton's use of legalisms to answer the charges of perjury and obstruction of justice in his impeachment proceedings can be understood in terms of the "Yale Argument," named for his law school. The Yale Argument, which often appears in constitutional argumentation, manipulates high levels of abstraction to arrive at the desired meaning. That this process often gives meanings to words different from their ordinary ones appears like lying to most people.
