A trunk full of trouble

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court decision in Harmelin v Michigan denies procedural safeguards to offenders subject to excessive punishment under mandatory sentencing laws. The court ruled that life imprisonment without parole for possession of cocaine was not disproportionate punishment under the Eighth Amendment. This decision is inconsistent with previous Eighth Amendment case law. Mandatory, determinate sentencing presents significant risk of excessive punishment; therefore, judicial review of proportionality should be required.

Hearing what we want to hear

Article Abstract:

Categorical perception refers to the ability to distinguish between different versions of the same vowel. This ability corresponds with the limitations of our basic auditory resolution ability. This sensitivity is learned early in life and is affected by the native language of the listener. Foreign language teaching and learning will benefit from a more thorough understanding of our ability to perceive speech.
